The Careers’ Session scheduled for 21st January had to be postponed because of the heavy snow. There was over 100 students booked to attend and this was a good indication of the need for this type of event therefore it has now been rearranged for Wednesday 22nd April. (4.15 – 6pm)

This event will be appropriate for students from GCSE to ‘A’ Level. As previously, would schools / colleges please give some indication of the number of students from your school / college expected to attend (maximum 20)  There is a maximum capacity for this event. THIRD SHEFFIELD YOUNG ARTISTS A LEVEL EXHIBITION 18-21 JANUARY 2015

Review and Update

Sheffield Young Artists A Level Exhibition interest grows and grows, attendees comments across the four days were enthusiastic. Highly supportive quotes were recorded in the Visitors book- “what talent” “ Well worth exhibiting” “brilliant range of techniques and topics” many were declared as “my favourite” for a wide variety of reasons “would love to have this at home” “has caught her personality so well” ” like the 3D effect”.

The best news is that Museums Sheffield have asked the small team of organisers from The Rotary Club of Abbeydale and Sheffield DFAS with the huge team of 100+ volunteers to plan for 2016. So Sheffield Young Artists in colleges and schools should start planning too, so they too can be selected by their Art staff as 2016 A Level or equivalent entries.

Museum Sheffield will then select those to be exhibited, judging will include input from the M:S Youth Forum. Of these Sheffield winners, a smaller group will also be selected for entry to the national 2016 NADFAS RBA Scholars Award.

The Royal Society of British Artists judges selected Fergus Carmichael’s oil on canvas “Conflict” for display not only in their 2015 RBA Annual Exhibition, The Mall Gallery, London March 11-22 but also for a new exhibition “RBA Rising Stars” at the Lloyds Register Gallery for all of February. Only 20 or so are selected each year, so it is a strong recognition of success and future potential.

Fergus Carmichael’s artwork “Conflict” with others is currently on display in John Lewis, Sheffield  Coffee Shop, as photographs of the finished works.

Overall pre snow attendance is 20% up on year ago. The new Sunday Family and Friends Preview proved especially popular with those at school and work on weekdays. The Master and Mistress Cutler attended, the Master presented Fergus Carmichael, 2015 NADFAS RBA Scholar , with the Sheffield DFAS Travel Bursary and also the three Highly Commended Awards, selected by Museums Sheffield  funded by Sheffield DFAS with Pinders, arts materials suppliers.

Kim Streets, CEO Museums Sheffield is thanked for her opening welcome, Ken Marshall for outlining the series of Sheffield Young Artists exhibitions with Sue Gilbert, national NADFAS Head of Young Arts for underlining the value of exhibitions and competitions to lift the profile of Young Artists. Cabinet Councillor Jackie Drayton is thanked for officially opening the exhibition and for confirming the Sheffield support for promoting the importance of art alongside sports and academic development.

The new in 2015 SYA Lecture by Ruth Nutter, John Ruskin- his impact in Sheffield was so oversubscribed that a bigger space and more chairs were needed - 60>100+. Ruth Nutter combined an outline of the Ruskin principles and practice of Art in the Community- much of which is still very valuable today with an early introduction to the 2015 Ruskin events, walks and talks around different parts of Sheffield. Full details in February.

Despite overnight snow the Exhibition opened on time yesterday, thanks to the Museum Sheffield staff and two volunteers who arrived on time, despite walking miles in deep snow and catching the first buses of the day. Sadly these volunteers already knew that 5 of the 8 schools and colleges which had booked 100+ students in for the Art in your Practice-Career Speed Networking after school were not going to open, let alone send minibuses at the end of classes.

Happily a new date will be announced which avoids the end of term, Easter and exams, to be checked out shortly. Joe Scarborough has agreed to open the workshop by talking of his two careers and the change to become a successful and unique artist, recognised as such by being the only Sheffield Legend who is an artist, others are known for their sports, comedy & other roles.

This was a repeat of the recent very successful Ponds Forge Exhibition and it is planned that all the 1000 pictures would again be on display, subject to available space.

The Town Hall is a magnificent building and a wonderful venue for Sheffield children’s art.

This is the first event of its kind for Sheffield Schools and it should provide a memorable end to the school year.

SHEFFIELD YOUNG ARTISTS EXHIBITION

Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield  9th / 10th May 2014

SHEFFIELD, ‘CITY OF EXCELLENCE FOR CHILDREN’S ART’

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Vickie Priestley, opened the 10th Anniversary Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition, organised by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, and presented prizes to the award winners in the 9 categories.  This event is established now as the largest Children’s Art Exhibition in the UK with an extensive range of paintings from over 60 Sheffield Schools.  Also, there were special displays of works produced by children from the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind, Ward M3 at the Children’s Hospital and from a group of Orphans in Zimbabwe. Special Endeavour Awards were presented to children in these groups in recognition of their determination and enjoyment of art in sometimes very difficult situations.

The Exhibition displayed over 1000 pictures highlighting the considerable talents of Sheffield Children from the ages 5 to 18 years of age. Each year there is evidence of the inspiration and  influence gained at previous years’ exhibitions reflected in ever increasing quality.

Families and friends of the artists thoroughly enjoyed the event and on the Saturday, on average, two adults visited the exhibition for every minute it was open and over the one and half days there were well over 1000 visitors to the Exhibition. So it was very busy and with all the noise and excitement of the children there was a wonderful family atmosphere but at the same time a new awakening to the true enjoyment of art.

This annual event has now been held each year since 2005 and the organiser, Ken Marshall of the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, continues to be amazed at the quality of work produced by the children of Sheffield. Nevertheless he is disappointed that most people in Sheffield are completely unaware of our talented young artists. As a city we should be proud that we have the largest Children’s Art Exhibition in the UK and we are providing our children with this opportunity to display their talent.

The Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition is held on Friday, Saturday of the first weekend in May.    During September, all schools in Sheffield are sent details of the following year’s Exhibition and invited to register, although the paintings are not required until March.

As a result of the success of Sheffield’s senior students and their recognition by the RBA, the 3rd Exhibition of ‘A’ Level work has been organised by The Rotary Club of Abbeydale and Sheffield Decorative and Fine Arts Society to be held at the Millennium Gallery in January 2015

Ponds Forge Exhibition 29th and 30th April 2016

On Wednesday, 20th April, the Lord Mayor, Talib Hussein, invited some of Sheffield’s Young Artists to a reception in his parlour at the Town Hall in recognition their success as award winners in this year’s Sheffield Young Artists Exhibition to be held at Ponds Forge on Friday and Saturday, 29th/30th April.

The Lord Mayor will open the Exhibition at 10am on Friday and it will remain open until 7pm.

On Saturday opening times are 10am – 3pm

Each year all Sheffield schools are invited to submit paintings for this annual competition/exhibition which was first introduced by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale in 2005.

This is the largest Children’s Art Exhibition in the UK and this year there will be over 1200 pictures on display, from schoolchildren aged 5-18 years.

There is a programme of young artists works throughout the year justifying Sheffield as ‘The City of Excellence for Children’s Art’

Ponds Forge Exhibition 29th and 30th April 2016

On Saturday opening times are 10am – 3pm

Each year all Sheffield schools are invited to submit paintings for this annual competition/exhibition which was first introduced by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale in 2005.

Sheffield Young Artists at the Town Hall

Sheffield City Council together with Kier and Taylor Shaw supported Sheffield Young Artists with an Exhibition at the Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday, 14th / 15th July.

Ponds Forge Exhibition 29th and 30th April 2016

On Saturday opening times are 10am – 3pm

Each year all Sheffield schools are invited to submit paintings for this annual competition/exhibition which was first introduced by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale in 2005.

Sheffield Young Artists at the Town Hall

Sheffield City Council together with Kier and Taylor Shaw supported Sheffield Young Artists with an Exhibition at the Town Hall on Monday and Tuesday, 14th / 15th July.

If students arrive early, it is hoped that Joe Scarborough will be explaining the formation and techniques used in his most recent paintings.
