Every opportunity is being taken to see Sheffield as the first City of Excellence for Children’s Art and the series of Sheffield Young Artists’ exhibitions, organised by the Rotary Club of Abbeydale, are helping to justify the reputation.
The latest exhibition of ‘A’ LEVEL ART held at the Millennium Galleries, 27th – 29th January, was a further example of the range of Sheffield students’ artistic talents. The Exhibition featured works by 40 artists whose paintings had been submitted to the NADFAS / RBA National Competition. The three day event attracted 1500 visitors who expressed amazement at the variety and quality on show and commented that it was good that this ‘hidden talent’ had been made available for public viewing.
The objectives of the exhibition were to inspire, demonstrate techniques and provide guidance and information on careers. It was a working exhibition and Sheffield Decorative and Fine Arts Society who were involved in the planning and running of the exhibition, organised 40 volunteers to participate.
Artists in Residence, from Hallam Art Group and Joe Scarborough, were available to discuss and instruct visitors on techniques etc.
On the Tuesday, Sheffield Secondary Schools were invited to send their students to a Career Networking Workshop where executives from local business, commerce, education and art establishments were available to give advice on 18 different careers - 79 students, aged 14 – 18 years attended.
